CVM Researchers Examine Effect of
Pain Medications on the Immune System

Dr. Amy DeClue, assistant professor of small animal internal medicine at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, was recently featured on an American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation podcast. DeClue discussed the preliminary results of her ongoing research concerning common pain medications given to dogs and whether those drugs could suppress the immune system, leaving dogs susceptible to infection after surgery or other procedures. DeClue’s research collaborators on the study, which is funded by the Canine Health Foundation, were Dr. Sandra Bechtel, an assistant professor of veterinary oncology at the CVM, and Dr. John Dodam, associate professor of veterinary anesthesiology and chairman of the College’s Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery.
